History
Vancouver Lake Crew began in February 2002. It is a non profit organization dedicated to the development of the youth of Clark County. VLC offers year-round rowing opportunities for rowers of all ages. We have adult recreational and competitive rowing, a middle school and high school team, summer boating camps. We outreach within the community and offer a "learn to row" day for blind students at the WA School for the Blind. Rowing is a great aerobic exercise, and is physically and mentally challenging.
On January 10, 2008, the facility at Vancouver Lake Crew was destroyed by a freak tornado that went through Clark County shortly after noon. In a matter of minutes, our entire fleet of boats, oars and trailers was gone. A few things were salvaged, but basically the entire club was leveled. Through the amazing generosity of the local and rowing communities, we rebuilt in record time. In a matter of days we were back on the water rowing. With donated and loaned equipment, we continued to train and made a great showing at the Junior Regional Championships in May. We had a great summer with a record number of kids going through the program. Mother Nature can not hold us back.
On August 31, 2009, we began the move to our new home at the entrance to Vancouver Lake Park on the west side of Vancouver Lake. Over a two week period, we moved our entire operation from one side of the lake to the other, beginning a new association with the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation. At our new location we have increased visibility and our largest high school turnout ever.
Coach Bill
| The founder of Vancouver Lake Crew, Bill Kalenius, passed away Wednesday September 23, 2009 after battling colon cancer for 6 years. "Coach Bill" as most of us knew him, was far more than just a rowing coach. For many of us Bill was a life coach. Coach Bill always said that rowing shouldn't be the first priority in our lives. He viewed things as Faith, Family, Friends, and then rowing. Bill had his priorities straight and throughout his life he touched the hearts of many, many people. Many people were able to see themselves differently and even find purpose in their own lives through rowing, all because of Bill. We will all remember Bill as not only an amazing rowing coach but an amazing man who put others first and changed lives. |
